baby teeth :::

Posted 20 Apr 2008 in News,Ramblings

A couple of nights ago I found a tooth on the kitchen floor. Jagged like a tiny mountain range, it could only have come from my puppy’s mouth and I was freaked out – had he chewed through one too many notebooks and suffered a dental accident? A quick search on the internet reassured me that like humans, dogs shed their baby teeth and replace them with the adult kind. Watch out, notebooks.

At the rate of one miniature Pyrenees per day, the teeth keep coming. And man does this dog love to chew. My belongings are stored on tables, perched in high, skinny piles against walls out of reach of his inquisitive mouth. A valuable discovery yesterday was the humble carrot – washed and left whole it’ll keep him occupied for at least half an hour and can only be good for him.

I’m out of the house much more these days – no more submerging myself in a cocoon of hermitude. Walkies are enjoyable, especially if the weather’s good. Fellow dog owners puzzle me – half of them are sweet and friendly, helpful and chatty, delighted to meet a handsome young puppy and talk for a few moments before carrying on with their own walk, the other half let their off-leash dogs lick and paw over my bemused pooch while completely blanking me. So weird.

On to my decision to run 10K through the streets of London on behalf of the RSPCA. I signed up for the BUPA London 10,000 months ago, wanting a decent challenge before my next birthday. Recently I started agonising over what charity to support and finally made my decision this weekend. My new puppy obviously has something to do with it but while I’m disgusted but no longer surprised at what humans do to each other, they’re supposed to be able to get help and support from their fellow humans. Animals don’t have families or police or governments to help them and you may be shocked to discover the RSPCA receive absolutely zero lottery or state funding, despite Britain being a supposedly pet-loving country.

The race is on Monday 26th May, and you can sponsor me on my Just Giving page here. Thanks!
