mexico – trip so far :::

Posted 12 Oct 2009 in Ramblings,Serious Shit,Travel

Buenas dias from a 70s throwback hotel in Aguascalientes, Central Mexico. Arriving late last night after a day of driving through breathtaking scenery (lush green fields, bountiful crops and livestock everywhere with majestic purple mountains all around) was a little like stepping in to an episode of Fawlty Towers – decorwise, I mean, as the staff are wonderful, the food is great and there’s even a lovely pool outside.

It’s been a relaxing day so far with much-needed time to catch up on emails and other web-based stuff, including catching up on uploading photos from the trip so far – you can see them all here but these are some of my favourites:

Once again I’m bowled over by the friendliness and generosity of the Mexican people. Watching from the van as we drove from Toluca to Aguascalientes yesterday it’s clear that everyday life is constantly on display and there’s no hiding from the fact that poverty is normal here. Harsh concrete blocks with no roofs house whole families, kids play in the dirt and pet dogs wander freely, left long ago to fend for themselves with mixed results – it’s the saddest roadkill I’ve ever seen – and yet the people smile and chat and thank you for visiting them.
