I just watched this very elegant speech Amanda Palmer made recently at Harvard on the subject of artists being unashamed to ask for donations for giving their work, well worth a watch and not just because I have something to plug today:
I'm off to America tomorrow, see you on the other side of the Atlantic!

This is such a good video, and I did buy the single from Bandcamp, well worth it. Tech has and is liberating the music industry for musicians. I hope these tools get the coverage they need. Seems to me like there needs to be a good resource guide for upcoming bands and artists on how to truly leverage these emerging tools. I know there are many resources and blogs to choose from, but how do tech noobs sift through the noise.
I am still surprised at how many musicians I speak to who have never heard of Bandcamp or have this negative opinion of twitter / social media as a tool for connecting to the audience.
Anyway – good work, love your stuff …

Hi Ket – sorry for the delay in responding to this but thanks very much for your comment, and I’m really happy you’re enjoying the videos and tunes so far. Your support is greatly appreciated!
I too know musicians who seem scared of being in control of their own PR and are dubious about services like Bandcamp, but I hope they realise soon that just because things have been done a certain way in the selling of music for so long doesn’t mean new models aren’t better. Bandcamp is the best thing to happen for musicians online, in my opinion, in the same way that Twitter is the best thing that’s happened in terms of social networking.
I think there probably are numerous guides on what services and tools musicians can use, but what are considered the best will depend on personal taste. I’m considering writing my own, but will that just add to the noise?
